Welcome, authors! Are you ready to take your writing to the next level?
Most people have prior commitments in their lives that often leave the dream of becoming an author on the back burner. As a college student myself and a part-time worker, every second counts when paving the way to success. So, if you have the luxury of dedicating ample time to building a sustainable writing career, there are certain steps you must take to do so effectively and not waste time!
In this blog post, we will explore some of the best methods to improve your writing skills. I will focus on both mindset and execution.Whether you are a beginner or an experienced writer, these tips and tricks will help you enhance your craft and bring your goals to fruition.
1. Read, Read, Read!
Reading is the foundation of great writing. To become a better writer, make it a habit to read extensively. Not everyone has the time to immerse themselves in various genres and styles, so I recommend that you read books and listen to audiobooks or podcasts that are specifically tailored to your niche of writing. Follow by example! Not only will this familiarize you with the specific writing conventions of your genre, but doing this will ensure that you have a strong foundation of what works and doesn’t work. Reading exposes you to different writing techniques, expands your vocabulary, and sharpens your storytelling abilities. Take note of the authors you admire and analyze their writing style. What makes their work stand out? Use their work as inspiration for your own writing.
Remember, as an inexperienced writer, you have not built up rapport to “break the rules,” so to speak; thus, it is important to learn from professionals who have had success in your field. Do not waste your time with unconventional writing styles right off the bat. It will take longer and discourage you far quicker. Only after you have built authority with your audience over the course of years can you play around with these different projects, hopefully with the expertise to execute them properly. Work smarter, not harder. It is good practice to emulate some of the methods that have been tried and true by others. This does not mean you should copy others, but to guarantee progress, following these methods will help you find success sooner.Having a balance between your passion and your business prospects is key. I know it can seem daunting at first, but have faith!
2. Write regularly, Building habits
Of course, everyone wishes they could set aside dedicated time each day for their personal passion projects, but prior commitments always come first. Be gentle with yourself and set reasonable goals. What I recommend is setting up a list of non-negotiable tasks and figuring out what can be let go of and what new prospects can fit your lifestyle. This list can and should include writing in some form for authors. If all you can commit 100% to every day is just listening to 15 minutes of a writing podcast on your commute, so be it. It will not be forever.
Once you determine your non-negotiables, create a wishlist for yourself of things you would like to accomplish in your spare time. Write down any outlandish goals and aspirations you hope for, and use them as a guide.
For example, though my main aspiration is to monetize my passion for writing, I am first a student; therefore, I will go long stretches of time without writing at all because of school, especially during exam season, as this is a non-negotiable for me. However, any pockets of opportunity I have, I know will be well spent on something I’m passionate about, and so it continues to drive me forward.
Do not feel guilty for missing days or adjusting your writing schedule along the way; even the best professionals go through ups and downs. The important thing is your capacity for resilience and keeping your goals at the forefront of your mind. It is completely okay to go long months without writing outright, so long as you continue to learn and strengthen your skills through other methods. I recommend that you keep reading, studying, and networking. And eventually, you will see your priorities shift and reap the fruits of your labor.
3. Create an Inspiring Writing Environment
Find a comfortable and inspiring space where you can focus on your writing. It could be a cozy corner in your house, a local coffee shop, or a peaceful park. Experiment with different environments and discover what works best for you. Some writers thrive in absolute silence, while others find inspiration in the bustling noise of a crowded café. Surround yourself with items that ignite your creativity, such as inspiring quotes, artwork, or objects related to your writing projects.
And for those you feel as if no matter how hard you work, you have yet to get off ground zero, the question I would ask if this is your experience is this: what people or bad habits are you allowing into your life that may consume you?
Creating an inspiring writing environment is not only external but can also be a journey of sorts. The reason I say to rid yourself of bad influences is because you must protect your body, mind, and spirit. Take care of your life and your health. You only get one life and one body. I’d wager to say that you are your own temple and reserve the right to free yourself from harm.
Of course, this has veered from the topic slightly, but this is so important if you wish to enjoy the journey to success. Being able to enjoy your life breeds the aspiration and motivation to do even more.
4.Self Nourishment
Writing can be an intense and solitary activity. One struggle of mine in this journey is that it can be quite lonely and isolating. Therefore, it is important to take breaks and prioritize self-care to avoid burnout. Allow yourself time to recharge, whether it’s going for a walk, practicing a hobby, engaging with friends, or simply relaxing with a good book. Engage in activities that inspire you and spark your creativity. Remember, taking care of your well-being is crucial for maintaining a sustainable writing practice.
So, authors, now that you have these valuable tips and tricks, it’s time to unleash your inner author and embark on your writing journey. Remember, the path to becoming an exceptional writer is paved with perseverance, dedication, and a love for the written word. Embrace the struggle.
